New & returning guests, welcome to the Emily Monk Davidson Gallery (EMD) at the Farmville Community Arts Council (FCAC), where we hope that you VIBE.
VIBE: Visual Identity, Bold Expression
The EMD Gallery at the FCAC is pleased to present the inaugural VIBE Student Art Show, running from June 14 through July 25. This exhibition marks the beginning of a new annual summer tradition, establishing a formal, inclusive space designed to celebrate diverse young voices, foster creative confidence, and strengthen the cultural fabric in and around the Farmville community.
Student artwork displayed in traditional school settings face strict time constraints, often installed and deinstalled in less than a 48 hour period due to limited or shared campus spaces. VIBE breaks this barrier by providing an extended, formal gallery setting that is available to a wider audience in an important effort to validate young artists, proving that what student creatives make matters.
The exhibition represents a series of around 400 original artworks from Farmville Central High School, taught by Art Educator, Ashley Cagle and all grade levels at The Oakwood School, regardless if they’re enrolled in an art course.
This initiative is a natural partnership rooted in local leadership. FCAC Art Gallery Manager Christopher Allen (grades PreK - K, 9 - 12) and FCAC’s Drama Board Member Natasha Smith (grades 8 - 12) both serve as visual art educators at The Oakwood School, creating a seamless bridge between organizations to bring families, educators, and residents together. Also represented is artwork created by students (grades 1-7) inspired by Oakwood’s visual arts educator Blaire Nichols. Recognizing a couple gaps that FCAC could fill in the community, we thank Ashley and Blaire who were key catalysts that inspired this show.
Additionally, by focusing on a student body that is ‘around the corner’ from the gallery and partnerships with independent, secular academic institutions, the gallery upholds its mission as a universally accessible, community-driven platform committed to independent thought and open, inclusive storytelling.
We invite you to experience the unique creative energy of our local youth. Thank you for celebrating the artistic milestones of these remarkable young voices with us.
